About This Tool
Most Indian government documents require passport photos with a plain white background. If your photo has a colored or textured background, this tool can help replace it.
The tool uses a smart flood-fill algorithm that starts from the image corners to detect and replace the background color — no server, no AI subscription needed.
- Works best on solid, uniform backgrounds
- Live preview updates as you adjust settings
- PNG download preserves transparency
- 100% private — no server upload
- Free, no watermark
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of backgrounds does this work best on?
This tool works best on plain, solid-color backgrounds — especially white, light gray, or pale blue studio backgrounds. Complex, textured, or gradient backgrounds may not be removed cleanly. For best results, take photos in good lighting against a plain wall or use a white paper background.
Why does "tolerance" matter?
Tolerance controls how different a pixel can be from the background color and still be considered "background". A low tolerance (5–20) only removes pixels very close to the corner color — good for cleanly lit white backgrounds. Higher tolerance (40–80) removes a wider range of colors — useful for shadows or uneven lighting near edges.
What is the difference between PNG and JPG download?
PNG supports transparency — if you selected "Transparent" as the replace color, the background will truly be transparent in the PNG file. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white. For government documents, JPG with a white background is most commonly accepted.
Can I use this before using the Passport Photo Maker?
Yes — that is the recommended workflow! First use Background Remover to get a clean white background, download the result, then upload it to the Passport Photo Maker to crop and generate your print sheet.
